Advice for creating a great online profile

When you're looking for a new job or positioning yourself for career growth, networking, or just increased visibility, it's essential to have an online presence where you can showcase your interests, skills, and experience. Your online professional profiles will also help you connect with contacts who can expedite your job search, connect you with others, and even assist you with the next step with your career.

If you are a plant biologist, you should have a professional profile on Plantae. You will also want to have professional profiles in other places as well (depending on your objective), such as LinkedIn or Twitter.

Do be sure to manage your profiles, so they are up-to-date. Employers and contacts want to see current information. When you have multiple accounts, it can be easy to mix them up. Think twice before you post to be sure everything gets posted to the right site.

Key elements of a strong online profile:

  • Professional photo
  • Well-written bio
  • Complete information in all fields
  • Links to your accomplishments
  • Clear articulation of your goals

When you are consistent across sites, using the same themes and photos, you will be able to create a strong personal—and professional—brand.
