NAASC Travel Awards Applications for ICAR 2020 are Due by February 29, 2020

NAASC will be distributing two categories of travel awards for eligible students, post-docs, and early career professionals to attend the 31st International Conference on Arabidopsis Research (ICAR), July 6-10, 2020 in Seattle, Washington, USA. Note: Category 1 awards are $500 USD toward conference expenses and will not cover all meeting costs. Please consult the Conference Budget Estimator and investigate your specific needs to determine the full amount you'll need to attend ICAR. If you receive a $500 travel award you must supply all your remaining participation costs.

There are two categories of awards for ICAR 2020:

Category 1 (US National Science Foundation Funded, possibly USDA and US DOE, applications pending): Early Career Travel awards of $500 USD for valid ICAR 2020 expenses: full-time plant biology researchers: undergraduate or graduate students, postdoctoral scholars/fellows in a postdoc employment title, and early-career PIs in the first two years of their first academic appointment. While most funds are limited to US applicants we are raising external sponsorship funds to support at least 20 non-US attendee awards. All awardees must present their research via a talk or poster.

Awards can be used for registration, travel, and/or lodging expenses (awardees choose how to use funding; Note: if using awards for travel or non-dorm lodging, awards are given as reimbursements after ICAR. If awardees choose to use funds for registration or dorm lodging we can cover costs up front, up to the amount of the award.)  

Category 2 (US National Science Foundation Funded): Full funding Under-Represented Minorities in US Science Awards are limited to US citizen or US permanent residents that are under-represented in US science (or faculty that teach/train/mentor URMs at accredited URM-serving institutions). Two paths to eligibility: 
(1)  Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), African-Americans, Latinx-Americans (specifically of Central or South American descent), and Native Pacific Islanders; and/or 
(2) Faculty who work at federally-designated US Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Black-serving non-HBCUs, and 1890 Institutions and who are directly supporting the education and professional development of students or postdocs in the described under-represented groups.

The Submission Process has Two Steps:

  1. Input your information into the google form: basic personal information/demographics, research abstract that you will present at ICAR, cv or resume, statement on the career impact of attending ICAR 2020, and the contact information of your letter writer (not required for Category 1 junior faculty). The system will auto-generate a confirmation email to be sent to you upon successful submission so you have a record of what was submitted.
  2. You must ask your letter writer to send their reference/recommendation/support letter directly to the organizing committee so it is received by the Feb. 29, 2020 deadline. It is your responsibility to ensure this is completed. Applications are incomplete without this letter of support (not required for Category 1 junior faculty.)

      1. Letter must be received by Feb. 29, 2020 Ask letter writers to include YOUR LAST NAME in the file name (e.g. Smith_ICAR 2020 Letter.pdf)
    2. You are strongly encouraged to check back with your letter writer to ensure we receive the letter by the deadline. You may also email the organizers at arabidopsisconference@gmail.com to ensure it was received. Remember: it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure letters are received by the deadline. You should give your letter writer ample notice of the need to write the letter (we recommend a minimum of 2-4 weeks) and to inform them of the deadline that we must receive the letter.  

Please note: We strongly encourage you to prepare your abstract, statement and cv/resume outside of the system and simply cut and paste your response when prompted. 

Selection will be based on:
Category 1/ Early Career: (1) quality of the science and research abstract, (2) strength of the curriculum vitae, (3) strength of the recommendation letter (not required for junior faculty applicants), (4) strength of the statement on career impact of attending, (5) whether the applicant has received conference funds from NAASC before, and (6) ethnic, gender, and geographic diversity. Note: typically at most, only 1 member of a lab will be selected funding unless there are excess travel awards/few applicants.

Category 2/US URM awardee (NSF-Funded): The primary goal of this funding is to provide new opportunities for US scientists that are themselves under-represented in US science (or that teach, or otherwise impact, groups under-represented in US science) to participate in the annual international platform plant biology conference that focuses on the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Therefore, the selection committee will give preference to diverse applicants based on (in no specific order):

  1. Applicant’s stated desired benefits to them, and potential for impacting their career, by attending the ICAR (and positive impacts to others that are under-represented in US science)
  2. CV or Resume
  3. Letter of Support provided on behalf of the applicant
  4. Career stage, gender, institution type, geographic location in the US
  5. Current and past access to similar funding opportunities
  6. Availability of resources at their home institutions (‘resources’ include, for example, funding access, and available institutional programs and activities aimed at supporting URMs and related activities)
  7. Whether the applicant has received this URM award (a person may receive this award at most twice)

Research abstract to be presented at ICAR, oral or poster (max 2000 characters including spaces but excluding title and author(s)); this is optional but strongly encouraged for URM/Category 2;  Brief Curriculum vitae or resume (1-2 pages maximum which must include undergraduate, graduate education and degree attainment, and professional appointments, if applicable; and should include awards/fellowships, scientific presentations given, relevant activities and up to 5 recent publications); Brief paragraph (maximum 1500 characters, including spaces) describing how your attendance at ICAR 2020 will benefit the meeting and how it will benefit your career goals; Advisor’s letter of recommendation to be sent to arabidopsiconference@gmail.com (Jr. faculty are exempt from submitting this letter); and Current and pending support (faculty only.)

Category 2/URM applicants also will be asked to provide some information for the ICAR 2020 URM Cohort on your research and/or education interests; your personal and/or professional goals for attending; and names of biologists (in Arabidopsis if possible) in whose research you are interested in (if you do not know any you may also list topics in lieu of naming biologists). All URM applicants, including faculty, must arrange to have a letter of support provided and sent to the organizers at arabidopsiconference@gmail.com by the deadline (Feb. 29, 2020.)

There will also be a check box asking if your research for ICAR 2020 fits into one of several categories that we are currently seeking (or have) funding for. Please note that this is for our post-award organizing information only and will not be considered in the review process. The categories are: Basic/fundamental research; Development of Arabidopsis informatics tools and resources, including for use in other plants; Photosynthesis, light-related topics; Research in crops/applied translation to crops.
