Probably the world's heaviest living organism discovered and described in 2017 ?
A new tree species,as tall as 12 storeys building and as heavy as sperm whale has been discovered and described by Kew Scientists Gwilyn Lewis from Brazil in collaboration with researchers from Brazil and Canada. This new tree species named as Dinizia jueirana-facao belongs to legume family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae), grows to whooping 40 metres with an estimated weight of upto 62 tonnes. This new species is critically Endangered grows in a narrowly restricted area of Atlantic forest in Brazilian state Espirito Santo and only 25 trees are known from all over the world. This is the reason why such a majestic species has gone undiscovered and scientifically unnamed for so long.
These scientists speculative that if such a gigantic species are being described as new to Science in 21st century, just imagine how many smaller organisms are still waiting to be discovered.
