The WiPB Committee meeting at PlantBio19
August 7th 2019 -meeting summary
Our in-person committee meeting was on Wednesday August 7th at 7:30 - 9:00 am at #PlantBio19 meeting in San Jose.
At #PlantBio19, we met our Sharon Gray WYITA recipients. Congratulations to all of them!
Based on the feedback we received from the two workshops we will propose the following workshops for next year's #PlantBio20: collaborating again with MAC to have a workshop on Implicit Bias and also have a Lunch with a Guest Speaker (topic TBD, depending on the Major Symposium speakers). We would like to have a Conversation Circle discussion, let us know if you have suggestions for topics or would like to moderate it! We also thought about having a WiPB Network Meet-Up, but we will need to see how/when this will fit into the schedule.
Here are some other ways you can get involved with the WiPB Network: https://community.plantae.org/article/5323677477464180644/how-to-get-involved-with-the-women-in-plant-biology
Beyond the annual meeting, we also have been hosting webinars on Leadership and Mentoring: Soft Skills Seminars. These webinars seem to be gaining some traction, The Power of Listening in Mentor-Mentee Relationships. However, we know that these webinars are long and not feasible for everyone to watch all of them, all the way through. So an idea came up at our committee meeting of doing some short 2-minute videos answering some FAQs that people may have. If you have suggestions on topics/questions, please post them below!
We have been trying to update our Plantae Women in Plant Biology Network site, we know it needs some improving and TLC, so please check back periodically. You can also follow us on Twitter @ASPB_WiPB!
The 2019 WiPB Committee members are:
Laura Wayne (Chair), Eva Farre, Grace Miller, Kelly Gillespie, Li Tian, Sreekala Chellamma, Katie Murphy (our Early Career Rep), Sylvia Lee (ASPB Staff), and Crispin Taylor (Staff Liaison). Katie Rogers has also been helping with our webinars and Plantae. On October 1st, Sreekala will be rotating off and Aruna Kilaru will be joining our committee.
